About THETA

THETA's origin is derived from its namesake, the theta brainwaves.

Why ‘THETA’? At 4-8hz, the theta brainwaves are the slower of the brainwaves, typically firing when we are in spaces of routine, introspection, flow, creativity, mind-body connection, and ease.

Based in the heart of Toronto, THETA was created as a way to bring mindful movement, approachable spirituality and heart-centered community to those of us that live a busy, urban lifestyle. We believe that connecting deeper to ourselves and beyond (or ‘spirituality’),  should not be intimidating or unwelcoming. You won’t find us in all white chanting around open flames to a higher power. You will, however, find us in safe circles with the intent to connect to the deeper parts of ourselves and to one another, engaging in the healing tools of sound, sharing, breath, movement, meditation and journaling.

Our goal is to bring these approachable and healing practices to the world, one circle at a time.

THETA is a safe space. THETA is inclusive of all. THETA is home. It is a space of healing, of moving, of breathing, and of loving. A space free of judgment, self and outward. A place of vulnerability. A space of mind-body connection - to self, the Earth and community.
As a female and queer-owned space, we cherish and celebrate diversity.

Bronwyn + Kaylyn

THETA Co-owners + Movement Facilitators

An Aries and a Libra walk into a coffee shop and decide to open a movement studio.

After meeting at their former place of work, Bronwyn and Kaylyn were swept up into a friendship and partnership that feels nothing short of kismet. Their first business meeting took place in the tropical waters of Costa Rica. It was there they realized that more than just their love for mindful movement was aligned. It started with Yoga in the Park during the summer of 2021. Then came their first Full Moon Circle in September. And now, here, with THETA: the manifestation their dream movement studio, even more so a vibrant community, rooted in the idea that movement should feel good, that everyone should be and feel welcome, and that mental wellness comes first.

THETA’s Values

  • Sustainability

THETA is whole-heartedly committed to preserving the planet. We only have one Mama Earth and we want to do everything in our power to keep her healthy.

THETA strives to be a minimal to zero-waste business and facility. This philosophy is reflected in everything from our selected equipment, cleaning products, purchasing habits, and consumable goods. We avoid plastic products at every opportunity, we repurpose as much as we can, and we support other brands and businesses with similar standards and values.

  • Inclusivity

This is not a “good vibes only” space… This is a “come as you are” space. We welcome and embrace all people, of all kinds, in all phases of the journey - physical, mental and emotional. No matter the phase you’re in, you’ve got a place here for your mat.

Our goal is to have you feel safe and at home in THETA’s community. We operate under an absolute zero tolerance policy to harassment, discrimination and general assholery. Always.

  • Empowerment

We believe that empowerment comes from feeling truly supported - both outside of yourself and from within. That’s why community building is so important to us. We want you to make some nice friends and to feel seen and supported by those around you. We also want to encourage you to trust yourself - above all else. You won’t find us pushing you, but rather inviting you to strengthen that trust muscle and move towards what feels best for you moment to moment.
No judgement here, only respect for listening to yourself.

Kaylyn Gelata

Kaylyn is a certified yoga and contemporary Pilates instructor and has been teaching group, private and corporate classes since 2017. Kaylyn’s movement practice and teaching style is best described as ‘mind-healthy’ movement… movement to challenge you, to check your ego at the door and to get out of the monkey-mind and into the present moment.

Using functional movement as her guide, alongside thoughtfully curated playlists, her classes aim to leave you feeling balanced - mind, body and heart.

Brendan Bornstein

Brendan started playing hockey at 2 years old, and has spent most of his life playing hockey competitively around the US and Canada where he is currently playing for the University of Toronto. As someone who has been involved in sport and competition his whole life, movement and fitness have played a huge role in who he is. Brendan’s love for yoga started in 2018 and in the summer of 2021 he took his passion to the next level when he completed his yoga teacher training.

Brendan has worked with competitive athletes where he focuses his classes on energy and heat building sequences with mobility and strength work. He emphasizes mind body connection in his sequencing, and his background in athletics combines dynamic movements with the philosophies and integration of classic yoga sequencing to create a modern style of power vinyasa. After moving with Brendan you will feel energized, uplifted, and connected!

Brendan’s vinyasa classes are for anyone who wants to move their body, build heat and energy, and incorporate mobility and strength work into the practice
